Kinja'd!!!

Who here has watched it, what were your thoughts?

My wife and I watched it last night and were...

.

.

.

Disappointed.  It just wasn’t that great.  Biggest bummer is that we only get two specials this year, so there’s only one more chance for really good content.

I can relate to that. I wasn’t disappointed, but it also wasn’t their very best work. I’d rank it good but not great. I enjoyed the evening watching the three of them doing their thing, but it wasn’t as special as some of the other, um, specials.

Part of me wants to say that like every performance artist, you can’t always find the magic every time. We were also coming off the Mongolia special and the last two regular episodes of last season that I would rank among the absolute best work they’ve ever done.

Agreed - part of me just thinks boats isn’t their thing. Also maybe a little more challenging for their core fans to understand/empathize with.

Mongolia was great, some of their best work.  My all-time favorite is still Bolivia.

I haven’t watched any of the Grand Tour because Clarkson’s schtick as a human outside the confines of his on-screen personality wore thin for me years ago.

So I took a little pleasure in this delightfully scathing review.

I really liked it actually. It certainly wasn’t their best adventure but this one felt a bit more genuine and less scripted than others. This whole episode felt like a bit of a shit show, but it really seemed like it was an actual shit show compared to some of their other specials where they intentionally do dumb things to make it exciting.

I also love boats, and have a decent amount of experience driving them (smaller fishing boats however, but same principals) so it was easy to relate to their annoyances of wind, lack of steering, and general lack of control. It was also incredibly stressful watching their ineptitude throughout the show, especially Clarkson, who was supposedly an experienced boater (although to be fair, jet boats do have very little control at low speed).

The part that really got me though was their last jaunt across the sea. That was genuine concern, fear, and frustration, and I was right there with them because I’ve been in those types of situations before and it’s no joke. I was truly relieved when everyone, including the camera crew, showed up at the final dock.

I imagine that’s much of why it didn’t resonate with me - I’ve just never been into boating. I appreciate that they tried to do something a little different, but I had a hard time getting onboard.

The portion crossing the South China Sea was seriously frightening - it seemed like the only time they actually fell out of “character.”

I thought it was fine, and I generally enjoyed it, but it wasn’t great. I guess I was a little disappointed too.

It was well done. It was good to watch.

The repartee was a bit lacking, and the comedy was a bit thin, because the situation didn’t lend. even messing with each other’s vehicles wasn’t as much fun.

They seemed to be a bit too far out of their element to enjoy the situation.

And toward the end it showed that it got serious enough for genuine concern, not comedic distain.

It did get me thinking about what a modern-design PBR would be like... I know nothing about boats... but while the pump-jets are very cool for main propulsion, protecting the intakes from debris, and possibly incorporating some low-speed maneuvering thrusters... at least a steerable bow thruster for steering and docking, could possibly help.

I personally loved it. The acknowledgement of climate change was somewhat unexpected from the trio, and the whole thing  gave me Vietnam Special vibes.

Getting aboard - missed opportunity there.

Yeah, that last stretch was pretty real, when May finally showed up it was pretty easy to tell that they were actually glad to see him, and he them. No sarcasm, no witty jokes, just glad that they all made it across .

It was Vietnam Special with boats. Almost scene for scene. I like it.
